Radio planning
Due to the usage of transmission frequencies within the GHz frequency band and their physical propagation conditions, the complete track coverage by large radio ranges and seamless handovers between adjacent base stations are subject to virtual line-of-sight propagation aspects. Therefore, all radio base station components alongside the track need to be positioned in such a way that reliable radio coverage is achieved even in the most difficult conditions of an extended underground network. Prior to installation of the radio base stations, radio planning is required to define their exact positions, to optimize the radio performance, but also to limit installation and hardware costs by using relevant components.
The radio planning process takes advantage of TELEFUNKEN’s long experience in radio planning and is based on specific computer simulation tools used for exact radio predictions in tunnel and free field areas of a rail track. Such simulation is based on construction details of the track. It will guarantee precise results even under severe conditions. Complementary site surveys may be used to clarify further aspects of the track topology.
